Do I need special insurance to be a courier?

With the rise of online shopping and the gig economy, it seems like there has never been a better time to become a delivery driver. But you may be wondering what types of cover are required. Below we look at some potential covers that can be included in your policy. However, do not be concerned if you are unsure as to what cover you need to include – you’ll discuss this with an expert when you arrange your insurance.

Motor insurance

Couriers need a specialist insurance policy as most standard insurance policies don’t cover carrying other people’s goods for hire and reward. If you don’t already have a policy, Quote Goat can help you compare courier insurance quotes.

Goods in transit insurance

Although optional, you should consider goods in transit insurance to cover the items you are delivering on your customer’s behalf. Otherwise you will be out of pocket in the unlikely event packages are damaged or stolen.

Public liability insurance

Again, this is optional, but public liability insurance will protect you in the event you accidently injure someone or damage their property.

Employer’s liability insurance

If you have any employees, you are legally required to have employer’s liability insurance. This isn’t required for self-employed drivers.

How can I find cheaper courier insurance?

As well as comparing quotes for different providers each year, the following tips may help you reduce the cost of your courier insurance:

  1. Build up a no claims bonus:
Having a no claims bonus demonstrates to courier insurance providers that you are less likely to make a claim on your insurance policy which will usually make it cheaper to get insurance.
  2. Avoid over-insurance
Lots of insurance policies, including courier insurance, can come with bundled insurance products that you may already have elsewhere. An example of this, may be breakdown cover being included in your courier insurance policy as well as your bank also covering this with a reward current account.
  3. Overnight parking
Whether your courier work is in a van, car or motorbike, it pays to leave your vehicle in a safe place over night. Keeping your vehicle off public roads over night can help to make your courier insurance cheaper.

Why is courier insurance often so expensive?

Firstly, couriers are experienced drivers due to being on the road for most of their job. However, this means they are driving more often than most drivers and therefore statistically more likely to be involved in an accident, no matter how careful they may be. The fact that they drive from one unfamiliar location to another and often in busy city traffic only adds to this.

Vehicles used by couriers tend to be vans or trucks which are perceived as a higher risk by insurers, being larger and heavier than your average car and likely to sustain and inflict more damage.

Courier’s vehicles are often a target for thieves looking to steal high value packages when drivers leave vehicles unattended while a delivery is being made. You are responsible for the care of packages in your custody and in the unfortunate event an item is stolen, you will have to cover the cost yourself unless you have goods in transit cover. The additional cost is still potentially cheaper than paying for losses of goods yourself. This isn’t standard in all policies and may be an optional extra, so it’s worth checking your policy wording.

Courier insurance may include public liability insurance to protect you in case a member of the public makes a claim against you. Although worthwhile, it will increase the overall cost of your policy compared to a standard policy which may not have this type of protection included.

For these reasons, courier insurance is most likely going to be more expensive than standard business cover. This is only amplified if you are a young driver or have convictions.
