What Is Courier Insurance?

Courier insurance is a form of hire and reward insurance. It is a specialist commercial policy that provides protection for people who make multiple deliveries each day. It typically consists of three areas of cover: your vehicle, liability and the goods you are transporting. It is not to be confused with haulage insurance, which covers people making single deliveries on longer trips.

What is the difference between courier insurance and haulage insurance?

Courier insurance is there for delivery drivers making multiple drop-offs per day in comparison to haulage insurance which is typically for lorries or drivers making one or two deliveries per day.

What does a courier insurance policy include?

Courier insurance can be thought of as a package of covers including motor, hire and reward, goods in transit & public liability as well as others. Here we look at each one in more detail:

Motor insurance for couriers

As with standard van insurance or car insurance policies you can choose between third party only (TPO), third party, fire and theft (TPFT) or comprehensive cover.

  • Third Party: covers damage to other peoples’ property. It does not provide protection for damage to your own vehicle.
  • Third Party, Fire & Theft: similar to third party cover but it includes protection should your own vehicle be stolen or damaged as a result of a fire.
  • Comprehensive: provides cover for third parties and your own vehicle in the event of an accident.

Working as a courier involves a lot of miles on the road, stopping and starting, driving in populated areas and often meeting tight deadlines. These factors increase the risk of an accident which is why a specialist cover is needed. As a result, a standard van or car insurance policy will usually not permit the vehicle to be used for courier work. Using your vehicle without the correct insurance can invalidate your policy.

Hire and reward insurance

Hire and reward insurance is also known as class 3 business insurance. It is a legal requirement for anyone delivering goods or belongings in return for payment. However, it won’t cover the items that you are delivering, for this, you will need Goods In Transit insurance (see below). Hire and reward cover doesn’t just apply to couriers; taxi drivers, food delivery drivers and many others are required to have hire and reward insurance in place.

Goods in transit insurance

Goods in transit insurance provides protection for the goods you are delivering should they be lost or damaged. It is not legally required but you still may wish to include it as part of your policy. Some employers will require you to have it before you work with them.

Public liability insurance

Again, public liability insurance is not a legal requirement but it can protect you in the event of damage or injury to members of the public and their property whilst you are at work. An example of this may be damage to a car in the street as a result of it being knocked by a package you are delivering.

Employers liability insurance

If you run a courier business with employees, you will be required by law to have employers’ liability insurance in place.

Other optional extras/add-ons

There are a range of optional extras or add-ons that you may wish to consider when it comes to choosing an insurance policy. Below are 5 examples of typical optional extras/add-ons. Some policies may include these as standard, and other policies may charge for them, so it is worth keeping them in mind when deciding where to purchase your cover from.

  • Breakdown cover – assistance should your vehicle breakdown
  • Windscreen cover – in the event that your windscreen is damaged or needs to be replaced
  • No claims bonus protection – a no claims bonus helps to reduce the cost of your insurance, protecting it means you won’t lose it if you need to make a claim
  • Courtesy van/car – a courtesy vehicle will enable you to carry on working should yours need to be fixed
  • Legal protection – protection against the cost of legal fees

Tips To Find Cheaper Courier Insurance

Whether you are a self-employed courier or running a courier business, you’ll want to make sure you are keeping costs down.

One of the best ways to save money is to compare courier insurance quotes from multiple providers. Our quote form makes this easy by allowing you to compare quotes from up to 5 specialist courier insurance providers in one place.

As well as using a comparison site, here are 5 other ways to help you find cheap courier insurance quotes.

1

Opt for a black box

A policy that includes telematics can help lower the cost by allowing your insurance provider to monitor your driving and usage. Safer drivers are rewarded with lower premiums.

2

Build up a no-claims bonus

No claims bonuses (for both your personal vehicle and your courier cover) are a factor that contributes to the cost of your policy. Drivers that have built up longer no claims periods are usually rewarded with cheaper premiums.

3

Avoid unwanted extras

Only include necessary covers in your policy. Carefully check the wording of your policy before you purchase to make certain that you are not inadvertently purchasing unnecessary add-ons.

4

Consider your overnight parking

If possible, park your vehicle off road overnight as this can reduce the likelihood of vandalism or theft.

5

Pay annually

Pay your premium annually to save on any interest charges incurred if you pay monthly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will standard van insurance cover my courier work?

No, most standard van policies will not cover you for work as a courier. Driving a van as a courier involves a different level of risk compared to standard use of a van. However, if your van insurance provider permits it, you may be able to take out a hire and reward policy along with your standard van insurance.

Can I take out courier car insurance?

Yes. The quote panel we work with includes courier insurance providers who will offer courier insurance for cars. It is important to note that a standard business or personal use car insurance policy will often not allow you to use your vehicle for work as a courier.

Can I arrange cover for multiple vehicles?

Yes. Our service can be used by self-employed couriers as well as businesses for single vehicles or a fleet.

Is food delivery covered by courier insurance?

If you are delivering food, for example whilst working for a food delivery app, you will need hire and reward insurance. You can however still use our courier insurance quote form to search for cover. For more information please visit our food delivery insurance page.

Can I pay monthly for my insurance?

Yes. Most insurance providers will allow you to pay monthly although it is worth noting that this is normally more expensive than if you pay annually for your cover.

Is courier insurance a legal requirement?

Yes. If you deliver goods in return for payment then you are legally required to have courier insurance.

I need advice, who can I ask?

When you complete the quote form on our site, you will be contacted by up to 5 specialist insurance providers. They are able to create a tailored policy to suit your requirements and are also best placed to answer any questions you may have.

Do you insure self-employed couriers?

Yes. Our comparison service can be used by self-employed couriers right the way through to businesses with a fleet of courier vehicles.

Can I be covered for driving abroad?

This depends on your policy. If you require European cover, make sure to check with your insurance providers.

I’m under 25 years old, can I buy courier insurance?

Age is an important factor when it comes to determining the risk of insuring a courier and therefore a number of companies will not offer cover for drivers under 25. However, the panel we work with does have insurance providers that are able to offer cover for drivers aged 17 or older.

Do I need courier or haulage insurance?

You will need courier insurance if you make multiple short journeys. Haulage insurance is for delivery drivers that make long journeys that are typically pre-arranged.
