Who Is Opus Energy?
Operating since 2002, Opus Energy have grown into one of the major competitors for the ‘Big 6’ Energy providers in the UK providing gas and electricity exclusively to small and medium sized enterprises, and more recently, large corporations.
In a move away from how the ‘Big 6’ operate, Opus Energy chooses to deal solely with businesses and doesn’t provide any kind of domestic energy. They do, however, help businesses with their renewable energy targets by offering installation, tariffs and even offer a buy-back scheme for any company that produces more energy through wind, solar, anaerobic digestion and hydro than they currently use themselves. This gives businesses in the UK the chance to save money by making money on their energy usage.
Although they have been operating since 2002, it wasn’t until they broke into the same bracket as the so-called ‘Big 6’ in 2015 that they became much more dominant as an energy supplier.
Their business model seems to be doing something right as they currently have a revenue of around £500 million and employ around 700 people, all of which are based in the UK and count towards their aim of providing excellent customer service through UK-based call centres.
Their energy plans are tailored to each individual business and if you take a look at the different businesses that choose them over other large suppliers, you can see clearly that these tariffs are sought after.
As well as sourcing their energy from clean and renewable sources – 100% of their electricity last year came from zero carbon sources – their USP is boosted by their moto to support, not just supply their customers with energy.
Opus have dual-fuel contracts available to SMEs as well as electricity only and gas only plans. Businesses who sign up to a fixed price contract with Opus energy will receive a dedicated online account management as well as a free smart meter if they choose a business electricity tariff.
Large businesses who spend over £100,000 pa or that have more than 5 sites have their own specialised tariffs now also have the choice of different fixed of flexible energy plans:
- Opus Evolution – A flexible electricity contract which allows businesses who use 5GWhs per year direct access to the wholesale market in an attempt to buy energy when prices are lower.
- Opus Fixed – Large businesses can choose a fixed contract option for electricity for the duration of their contract or opt for a flexible contract size depending on the size of their business.
- Corporate Gas – Opus have extended their expertise by now offering gas to larger corporations as well as SMEs on fixed or flexible contracts.
Online reviews for Opus Energy are almost split directly down the middle. Trustpilot reviews are 47% excellent and 42% Bad with some written reviews claiming the company is an ‘absolute shambles’ when dealing with their customers whilst other hail them as the ‘best they’ve ever dealt with.’
Opus Energy have personally responded to each complaint, both positive and negative, but is seems even though their customer service is generally good, they are let down by invoices which are difficult to understand and mistakes in allocating payments.
