Happy employees are productive employees. It is a well-used office mantra and a very true one. As an employer, you need to go a lot further than just providing what your employees have a legal right to in terms of workplace facilities. If you can find cost-effective ways to keep your employees happy when they are in the office, you will see productivity levels soar and your profits will increase.

Providing them with the equipment that they need

Employees like to work in well-equipped offices. If you are able to afford cutting edge technology and equipment then they will be more effective when they are doing their jobs. They may also wish to separate their home lives from their work lives. This is best achieved if you provide them with a mobile phone exclusively for work.

Providing them with a pleasant office environment

No-one wants to work in a dirty, scruffy and outdated office. You should make sure that your workplace is somewhere that your employees are proud to work in. Maintain high standards of cleanliness and maintenance. Employ a cleaning and maintenance contractor if you have to.

Invest in a refurb and give the whole office a new lick of paint and some new flooring. Take a look at  for some inspiration and advice. At the same time, you should look at the desks and chairs that you provide. As an employer, it is your responsibility to protect your employee’s postural health. This means investing in ergonomic desks and chairs. Make sure that all the chairs have adjustable height and an adjustable lumbar support. You may need to provide footstool and ergonomic mouse mats to prevent repetitive strain injuries.

Introducing a caring office culture

It’s not just the way that your office looks that matters. You need to show your employees that you care about them and that want to help them maintain a healthy work-life balance. This could mean offering Pilates classes in the office or offering subsidized membership of a local gym. Could you offer counselling services to employees who are suffering from stress and other mental health issues? If these problems are nipped in the bud with effective interventions it can prevent the employee from taking an extended time off sick. We have also found this fantastic guide from our friends at Groom and Style to help employees survive stress at work.

Introduce a health-conscious culture to the workplace. Install vending machines that dispense healthy snacks and water coolers. Give employees the opportunity to get up from their desks and stretch their legs. An outdoor space would be ideal but an indoor area would do.

You will soon find that you get a return on your investment and increased productivity.
