Every website is created with certain aims in mind. For businesses, it is to make more people aware of the services that are being offered, make sales and help customers. For bloggers, it is to entertain, inform and develop a following. Grabbing the attention of visitors is a tricky business considering that people tend to look at web pages for between 10 and 20 seconds. Of course, the longer the user stays on your website, the more likely it is that you have captured their attention. As people are using the internet more and more, they are becoming increasingly skilled at telling a good website from a bad one, so let’s look at some of the essential functions that your website needs.

Say Who the Site is For

If people can’t tell who the website is for and what its main function is within a few seconds, they are likely to leave it quickly. Essentially, you want to sum up who your website is for in a couple of sentences and make sure these are clearly displayed. Multivariate testing helps to determine the effectiveness of your content and the ways in which how it is displayed makes all the difference. You could also consider the different ways in which to provide content, whether through text, videos or imagery.

Direct Visitors to the Main Point of the Site

If your website sells products, you will want to make sure that you inform people what you sell in the first place, maybe by displaying some of your most popular items on the home screen. A search function can help people to find the specific information they are looking for. If you offer services as a business, you will want to list these out in detail, while still breaking up any big chunks of text with subheadings and bullet points.

Encourage Users to Interact With You

The whole point of having a website is that it should open up a portal of communication between you and your customers. Make sure that your contact information is clearly displayed throughout your site and list all the different ways that people can get in touch. Many websites now have an instant chat function that allows responses to be much quicker which is something you could consider. Also, you can open up a comments section on your blog page as a way of interacting with visitors.

Provide Users With Reasons to Keep Coming Back

If you write content for your website and just keep it the same throughout its entire lifespan, you are not providing a reason for people to keep coming back to it. First of all, you want to provide a good experience with plenty of interesting features and content, but you also should be looking to add new things all the time so people have a reason to keep coming back to your site time and time again. Making sure you tell people when your site has new things to offer – through social media, email etc – should also become a routine.
