It can be hard living and working as a freelancer, as getting enough work to keep you stable isn’t always an easy thing to do, especially if you’re just getting started. The tip is to keep at it and figure out ways to improve the situation so that you can continue doing what you love.

Here are some tips to help you be able to do that successfully.

Promote yourself

When you’re ready to start showing your face, it’s so important that you do it in the right way. Being able to understand the best way to market yourself and your business is the key to getting those loyal customers that every company wants. You need to get your brand out there as much as possible so you create a buzz of interest around the products or service you’re offering.

Social media is a brilliant way of doing this because our world now tends to be centred by these networking sites. People look to social media for worldwide news, advice, fashion, gossip, and services, so the more bases that you can touch, the better your chances are. Having said that, it’s still important to get yourself out there in the physical world too. Meet people, hand out business cards, and go to networking events.

Get yourself seen

This is most likely what you’ve been trying to do for a while now, but if you’ve still not seemed to have any difference in business flow, your technique may be wrong. For example, do you know where you come up on in a Google search? – If you don’t already know the answer to this, then that is part of the problem. The higher the ranking you are in search engines, the more chance you have of getting interest. This term is called ‘search engine optimisation’, also referred to as SEO. If you aren’t sure on how to boost your rankings, there are many of affordable SEO services out there to help you along the way. These are trained professionals that work alongside you and give you as much knowledge and as many tricks as they have up their sleeve, to give you ultimate success.

Be proactive

Don’t be scared or nervous to get out and approach agencies and brands that you’d like to work for – even if it’s obvious that you’re punching above your weight; it doesn’t hurt to try! The worst case scenario is them saying no, and that’s what you have expected to happen anyway, so you’re not losing anything.

Another great tip is to look back through all of your old contacts and give them a call or an email. Just because they may have forgotten about you, doesn’t mean they don’t want you anymore. The same goes for contacts from a contact – you may have never worked for them, but you built a rather nice relationship with them that could be taken a little further in terms of them hiring you for a project. It’s just about being imaginative and taking a chance.

Keep Costs To A Minimum

One aspect of running your own business that can be overlooked is keeping running costs to a minimum. Every pound really is worth its weight in gold so be sure to keep an eye on the costs of services you require. If you have an office then take the time to compare business energy costs, users on our site save an average of 40% by comparing energy providers each year. The same goes for insurance, from taxi insurance through to tradesmen insurance, loyalty doesn’t always pay so when it comes round to renewal time, compare quotes to check you are keeping costs to a minimum. Another area that often leads to unnecessary expense is freelancers working with multiple currencies, using the bank to handle currency conversion. Banks can charge as much as 5% when converting currencies whereas currency brokers will charge around 1% or less depending on the volume of transactions going through.
