I’ve built and run websites since 2008 and in that time I’ve used a number of hosting providers, from those pushing us to use dedicated servers (almost certainly unnecessarily) right through to a hosting company that managed to wipe out every single bit of data for 10,000’s of their customers, including us, at the execution of a rogue script.
Two years ago, we had a particularly bad incident with a hosting company called Site5. When we first signed up to Site5 their customer service was impeccable but much to our misfortune another company that is infamous for purchasing and subsequently streamlining hosting companies came along and purchased our hosting provider.After signficant periods of down-time, price increases and absolutely no customer service response for 9 months, I decided to take the plunge and move to a new provider.
GURU.co.uk popped up in my searches and after a bit of investigation and a number of discussions with the team there, GURU looked like a solid choice at a reasonable price. They were only too happy to help with the migration of a number of sites that we had with Site5 and although I was dreading the thought of moving a number of sites to a new provider, GURU held my hand through the process and finally I was free from Site5.
It is inevitable that during your time as a small business you are going to need to ask your hosting provider for help with site changes, new ideas, functionality and more. I was always conscious of asking too much from my previous hosting providers but even so, I would still often be met with the standard answer of “we’re sorry, we do not offer support on this matter, please speak to your developer.” That’s fine in some cases, but if you are the developer and you do not know the answer you can quickly hit a brick wall.
This all changed when we switched to GURU. Nothing ever seems too much trouble for their support team, to the point where I have regularly offered to provide testimonials.If you are a small business, or simply do not have a regular developer on hand to delve into the more technical aspects of hosting, even on a shared service, I can confidently say that you really are in safe hands when it comes to GURU.
Previous hosting providers would all insist on 99.9% uptime or similar, but this was never the case. The sites we own seemed to go down at the worse times, e.g. on holidays etc. and resolving the issue could take up to 3 days. If you run your own business you know that 3 days website downtime is simply not acceptable, especially if your business is based solely online.
It’s been approximately two years since we moved to GURU for our hosting and we have so far not had one moment of downtime that I can recall. It really is game/business-changing to be able to have complete confidence in your hosting provider and I am proud to say that we finally found that confidence when we switched to GURU.
