Every time you bring a new employee on board, the first week or two that they’re with you will be dedicated to training. They’ll spend those first few weeks shadowing your more seasoned employees and getting to grips with every aspect of the business. By the time they’re done, they’ll be just as clued up as everybody else. But have you considered the employees that have been with you for years? While they’ve had their two weeks training, that was years ago. Everybody forgets things from time to time, and your systems have probably been tweaked and updated multiple times since they started with you. If you don’t keep them updated, they’ll start making mistakes and they won’t be able to take full advantage of the updates that you’ve made. These are the areas that are affected if you don’t keep up to date with training.
Security is one area that you might not realise is affected by a lack of training. If you’ve hired security from somewhere like Cannon Guards, they need to be trained regularly. Laws about what they can and cannot do in a theft scenario are often changing and if they aren’t up to date, they may accidentally break a law and get you into some legal trouble. It’s also important that they are aware of any changes you make to your security systems, working hours, and other processes so they know exactly what they should be looking out for in terms of suspicious activity.
Your security could also be breached if the employees in the office aren’t up to speed with new procedures. Protecting customer information is vital for any business so you should have a system in place. If that changes and older employees are still doing the way that they always have, you’re at risk of breaches. They won’t realise that they’re doing it and if it goes unnoticed for a while, you could end up in some serious trouble.
One of the main benefits of that initial training period is that it sets expectations for employees. They know exactly what their job description is and what they are expected to do day to day. When the structure of the business changes, older employees will have different responsibilities. Training is a great opportunity to ensure that everybody understands exactly what their job role is. People can’t be blamed for not doing something if they didn’t know they were supposed to do it in the first place.
One of the main reasons people point to when they’re asked why they left a job is that they aren’t progressing or learning anything. If people feel as though they’ve been doing the same thing for years, without developing at all, they’ll get bored and want to change jobs. By training them in new things and giving them new responsibilities, you help to keep things fresh for them and make sure you don’t lose good people.
You should be training all of your employees at least once a year, even if it’s just a little refresher of the things they already know.
