When it comes to driving, few things are quite as annoying as a break down. One minute you’re driving along without a care in the world, and the next your vehicle decides it’s had enough, coming to a grinding halt and leaving you confused and concerned about the wellbeing of both yourself and your car.

But while breaking down can be a scary and stressful experience, if your car suddenly gives in on you then try not to panic as following a few steps will ensure you and your vehicle are safe. To avoid your problems escalating when you break down, here’s what to remember when you find yourself in this rather unfortunate situation.

Turn on hazard lights

Your hazards are to warn other drivers that your vehicle is encountering issues, so as soon as it becomes clear you’ll be blocking the way or causing potential problems for other drivers then hit your hazard lights immediately to give them as much notice as possible.

Pull over

Try to get your vehicle as close to the side of the road as you can. This is particularly important if you’ve broken down on the motorway as it’s likely there’ll be other vehicles overtaking at high speed so try to move onto the hard should whenever possible.

Get yourself and passengers out

If you’ve had an accident, it’s essential you get yourself and your passengers out of the vehicle as crashes into broken down cars are worryingly common. Although this should always be done on roads, it’s absolutely imperative on the motorway because with most cars travelling in excess of 50mph, if you’re hit by one of these while sitting inside then you’ll be seriously injured, if not worse.

Don’t try to resolve the issue yourself

Unless the issue is a clear and simple to rectify, don’t try to fix the problem yourself – allow the experts to take care of it instead. Standing by your car at the side of the road or motorway can be dangerous, so avoid putting yourself in any unnecessary danger and just sit patiently and wait for your assistance to arrive.

Call your breakdown cover

Once everyone is out of the vehicle and it’s in as safe a position as possible, it’s time to call your breakdown recovery company – assuming you have it! If not, then use the nearest emergency telephone for help, or have a look on your phone for reliable breakdown recovery in the area.  If you don’t have breakdown cover then you should seriously consider purchasing it, as this can be a God-send when you’re stranded and save you hundreds in the event you need assistance.

With Quote Goat, when you compare car insurance deals you can usually add breakdown cover to your policy. So, to make sure you’re covered, be sure to choose a breakdown policy from one of our carefully selected providers.
