It may be something we hope we never need to use but it’s something we’ll need if we want to drive on UK roads: Car Insurance. Vehicle insurance is a requirement if you drive anywhere using public roads in the UK and if you are caught driving without it, you can face serious penalties including unlimited fines, driving bans and the police may even be able to seize, and in some cases, destroy the vehicle being driven without insurance.

What does car insurance cover?

You need at least third party only insurance to drive on the roads legally. In the event of a crash third party only insurance will cover injuries to other drivers and passengers and damage to other’s property. Third Party is the minimum cover available, you can also secure a Third Party, Fire and Theft policy as well as a Fully Comprehensive policy.

Penalties for driving without insurance

Police now have ANPR technology to easily identify which cars on the road do or do not have insurance. If you are caught at the wheel of a car that doesn’t have an insurance policy in place you will receive a £300 fine and a 6-point penalty on your license.

In some cases the police may confiscate your vehicle and take it away to be destroyed.

If you are taken to court then you could also be landed with an unlimited fine and disqualification from driving.

What happens if I’m in an accident with an uninsured driver?

If you are ever in an accident with another driver the first thing you should do is exchange insurance details. But what happens if the other driver doesn’t have insurance?

You should immediately contact the police if you have been involved in an accident of any severity and the other driver doesn’t have vehicle insurance. You can also contact your own insurance company for further advice.

If you’ve ever been caught driving without insurance in the past, you can still find insurance policies in the future. All you need to do is compare convicted driver insurance online to find a suitable policy.
