Motorists’ fears have been eased after it was confirmed anyone making non-essential journeys during lockdown will still be covered by their insurance.

It had been suggested that anyone caught making unnecessary trips during the nationwide restrictions may be invalidating their motor insurance policy, but a spokesman for the Association of British Insurers allayed those fears with a statement explaining that’s not the case:

Motor insurers continue to cover those using their vehicle for commuting to work and NHS volunteering without you having to first tell them. You should always follow government restrictions, but if you do use your car for non-essential travel, you will not risk invalidating your car insurance.”

The alarm was first raised by Florence Codjoe from comparison site Uswitch who told the Daily Mirror that any journeys deemed to be non-essential could land you in hot water in the event of an accident: “You could end up paying thousands for repairs. If you’re unsure about your cover during lockdown speak to your insurer for clarification,” she said.

But after the Association of British Insurers quashed that suggestion, insurance provider LV also moved to put its customers’ minds at ease by confirming they’re still covered during the lockdown. A spokesman for the company said: “Customers may have read press stories online over the weekend suggesting that car insurance policies won’t be valid in the event a driver has an accident during lockdown.

“This is not the case for our car insurance customers and isn’t something they need to worry about. In the event they need to make a claim, we’ll support them as normal.”

These announcements will come as a welcome relief, although you should still try to follow the government’s guidelines nonetheless with potential fines ready to be dished out to those found to be breaking the rules.

If you have any questions concerning your car insurance and how your policy may be affected by the current restrictions, then it’s important to speak to your insurance provider as soon as possible.
