What Types of Car Insurance Are There?

There are three choices when it comes to level of cover, which you will need to be aware of; third party only, third party, fire and theft & fully comprehensive. It is a common misconception that opting for third party only cover is the best option for cheap car insurance, it is not necessarily. If in doubt, get a quote for all three types.

Check Mark Third Party, Fire and Theft

As above, but with added fire and theft cover which protects against loss and damage in the event of fire damage or theft of your vehicle.

Check Mark Third Party Only

Provides cover for damage or injury to a 3rd party or 3rd party property as a result of an incident where you are deemed to be at fault. A third party only car insurance policy provides the least amount of cover permitted by law.

Check Mark Fully Comprehensive

The most complete level of cover available. Fully comprehensive car insurance will usually cover you for damage/injury to your vehicle or yourself as well as damage/injury to 3rd parties and their property. Although this is the highest level of cover, what exactly is covered does vary between each car insurance policy so make sure that you read the fine print.

Car Insurance Groups

Every car belongs to an insurance group from 1 – 50. The car insurance group that your car sits in can play a big part when it comes to determining how much it will cost you for car insurance. Generally speaking, cars in lower insurance groups will cost less to insure, so you can save money on your insurance by keeping this in mind when it comes to buying your next car. To give you an idea of which cars are in which groups, groups 1-5 includes the Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo & Ford Ka. Groups 20-30 includes the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, Landrover Defender & VW Golfs. Groups 40-50 include the Porsche Boxster, Ford Mustang and Subaru Impreza.

Plus Sign

Lost keys cover: if your keys are lost or stolen, this optional extra will cover you for the cost of replacing your keys. This may seem unnecessary but the cost of replacing keys on newer cars can run in the hundreds of pounds.

Plus Sign

Windscreen repair and protection: an extra that covers the cost of fixing chips/cracks in your windscreen as well as sometimes covering the cost of replacing your windscreen although you may have to pay a small excess for replacement.

Plus Sign

It is such a valuable bonus that you can buy protection to keep your no claims bonus intact should you need to make a claim. Protection does vary between providers, some will leave your no claims bonus exactly as it is, whereas others will knock a year a year or two off your accrued years of bonus.
