Bristol Energy Review

Who are Bristol Energy?

Bristol Energy are the first energy company to be owned by a council with a aim to benefit society. This could very well be news to peoples’ ears as it means there are no corporate owners wanting to grow profits and earn ever increasing returns. However, if like me you’ve struggled in dealings with councils in the past then you may be slightly apprehensive. That said, I have never dealt with Bristol council and I am sure they are better than the London Borough I currently deal with.

On top of this Bristol Energy promises to reinvest their profits back into the community so it appears that everyone wins. Bristol Energy actually has three main aims, which are as follows:

Provide competitively priced energy
Help lower carbon emissions
Raise money for local services

The company has been trading since December 2016, so it is relatively new and it may be harder to find information about how their current customers are finding it, but we’ve done our best to be as informative as possible

User Reviews

At the time of writing, Bristol Energy have a rather poor rating on Trust Pilot of 2.9 out of 10 from 72 reviews. They have 25% of their customers saying they are Excellent or Good.

However, I am slightly wary of user reviews for new companies as it is often the case that customers who have had a negative experience are more likely to take the time to complain about a company than those who are content with their supplier.

Other independent reviews rate Bristol Energy as 4 out of 5.

Having looked into the Ofcom report, Bristol Energy have had more complaints than many of their competitors, however they have also solved more complaints within one day than their competitors have.

One thing that stood out to us as it is pretty rare for an energy supplier is that customers can walk in to Bristol Energy’s building at the Harbourside and deal with the company face-to-face. This can often help solve issues in a timely fashion. A big positive if you ask us.

Our Verdict

Opting for Bristol Energy means you know you’ll be indirectly helping the community whilst also working with a company that would appear to have their customers’ best interests at heart. You’ll also know that the company is not there to generate maximum profits which should enable them to stick to their goal of fair pricing.

On the flip side it would be prudent to expect teething problems for new companies particularly in terms of customer service as we have seen with other companies like Iresa Energy, who are suffering due to the underestimated popularity of their service.

Over time we’ll have a better picture of how this socially beneficial projects fares.
