Does Admiral offer courier or hire and reward insurance?
Admiral does provide commercial van insurance that can cover courier drivers in the UK, but you need to arrange their commercial product rather than their standard van policy.
If you deliver parcels for Amazon Flex, DPD, Evri, Yodel, or similar networks, your standard Admiral cover won’t protect you. You need a policy that includes hire and reward, which allows you to carry goods belonging to others for payment.
This isn’t optional. Delivering parcels without hire and reward cover means you’re driving without valid insurance, even if you have an Admiral van policy in place.
What is hire and reward insurance?
Hire and reward is the legal term for transporting goods or people for payment. If you earn money delivering parcels, takeaways, or other items, you need this cover.
Standard Admiral van policies exclude hire and reward. They typically cover:
- Social, domestic and pleasure use
- Commuting to a permanent workplace
- Limited business use for tradespeople travelling to jobs
The moment you accept payment for a delivery, your standard policy becomes invalid. An accident during a delivery shift leaves you personally liable for all damage, injury claims, and the value of any parcels you’re carrying.
For a detailed explanation of why standard policies don’t work, see Why Standard Van Cover Won’t Protect You When Delivering Packages.
What does Admiral courier insurance cover?
Admiral’s commercial van insurance for couriers includes:
Hire and reward cover
Allows you to carry goods belonging to others for payment, covering all types of parcel and food delivery work.
Business use
Reflects your actual working pattern, including multi-drop delivery, local or national radius, and varying delivery types.
Goods in transit
Covers the parcels you carry if they’re lost, stolen or damaged. Limits typically range from £5,000 to £50,000 per load, depending on your policy level.
Without goods in transit cover, you’re personally liable to the courier company or recipient if you lose a high-value parcel. Learn more about Do Delivery Drivers Need Extra Cover for the Goods They Carry?.
Public liability (optional)
Some courier contracts require public liability cover, especially if you enter commercial or residential premises regularly. Check your contract terms before purchasing.
How to get Admiral courier insurance
If you already have a standard Admiral van policy and want to start courier work, you must contact Admiral directly to switch to their commercial product. You cannot simply add hire and reward to an existing personal policy.
Failing to notify Admiral that you’ve started delivery work invalidates your entire policy. If you have an accident, your claim will be rejected and you could face prosecution for driving without insurance.
Does Admiral cover Amazon Flex drivers?
Yes, Admiral’s commercial van insurance can cover Amazon Flex drivers, provided you arrange the correct policy with hire and reward included.
Amazon Flex requires all drivers to hold appropriate business insurance covering parcel delivery. Your standard Admiral car or van policy won’t meet this requirement.
Does Admiral offer food delivery insurance?
Admiral’s commercial van insurance can cover food delivery work, including platforms like Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Just Eat.
Food delivery requires the same hire and reward cover as parcel delivery. Your standard policy specifically excludes this type of work.
How much does Admiral courier insurance cost?
Courier insurance costs more than standard van cover because insurers consider delivery work higher risk. Typical annual premiums range from £1,200 to over £3,000, depending on:
- Your age and driving experience
- Claims and conviction history
- Van type, age and value
- Postcode and overnight parking arrangements
- Maximum value of goods carried
- Delivery radius (local, regional or nationwide)
- Type of delivery work (same-day, next-day, multi-drop)
Younger drivers and those new to courier work face higher premiums. Drivers under 25 often pay significantly more.
What if you only deliver part-time?
If you deliver parcels a few hours each week alongside other work, paying for full annual courier cover may not make financial sense.
Some insurers offer flexible or short-term courier policies you can activate only when working. These can be more cost-effective than traditional annual policies.
However, you still need appropriate underlying motor insurance for your vehicle when not delivering. Your standard policy must permit business use during inactive periods.

Other insurers offering courier cover
Admiral isn’t the only option. Several UK insurers and brokers specialise in courier van insurance:
- Staveley Head
- One Sure Insurance
- Zego (app-based, pay-as-you-go)
- Acorn Insurance
- AXA (through brokers)
- Aviva
Premiums and coverage vary significantly between providers. Always compare quotes from multiple insurers before committing.

Questions to ask before buying
Before purchasing any courier van insurance policy, confirm:
- Is hire and reward included as standard?
- What are the goods in transit limits, and do they match your maximum load value?
- Are there restrictions on goods types (alcohol, electronics, high-value items)?
- Is public liability included or available as an optional extra?
- Can you work across multiple courier platforms (Amazon Flex, DPD, Evri)?
- What excess applies, particularly for younger drivers?
- Can you use the van for personal journeys outside working hours?
- Are there geographical restrictions on where you can deliver?
Consequences of delivering without proper cover
Driving without appropriate courier insurance is illegal. If stopped by police or involved in an accident, you face:
- Six to eight penalty points on your licence
- Unlimited fine
- Vehicle seizure and impoundment costs
- Criminal record
- Substantially higher insurance premiums for years
- Personal liability for all damage, injury and stolen goods
Courier companies may also terminate your contract immediately if you cannot prove valid insurance.
Getting the right cover for your situation
Admiral’s commercial van insurance can cover courier drivers, but you must arrange the correct product from the start. Never assume your existing car or van policy covers delivery work.
If you’re new to courier work, take time to understand exactly what your contract requires. Some courier platforms provide guidance on minimum insurance standards.
Always declare your actual work, delivery radius and typical goods values accurately. Underestimating these details to save money leaves you uninsured if something goes wrong.
