Do motor traders need public liability insurance?
Public liability insurance isn’t legally required for motor traders, but it protects your business if a customer, visitor or member of the public suffers an injury or property damage because of your activities.
Whether it’s worth having depends on your business model. If customers visit your premises, you collect or deliver vehicles, or you work on customer sites, the risk of a claim is significant. Without cover, you’d pay compensation and legal costs personally.
What does motor trade public liability insurance cover?
Public liability protects you against third-party injury and damage claims arising from your business operations. For motor traders, typical scenarios include:
- A customer slips on oil, tools or debris at your garage or forecourt
- You accidentally damage a customer’s vehicle while moving it on your premises
- Someone is injured during a vehicle handover or collection
- You damage another car or property while manoeuvring stock vehicles
- A visitor trips over equipment or signage at your site
- Water or cleaning chemicals damage a customer’s property during mobile valeting
The policy covers legal defence costs, compensation payments and related expenses. Even minor claims can reach tens of thousands of pounds once legal fees are included.
Which motor trade businesses need public liability?
You should strongly consider public liability insurance if you:
- Operate from a garage, forecourt or workshop where customers visit
- Run an MOT station, repair centre or diagnostics business
- Work as a mobile car valeter or detailer visiting customer premises
- Deliver or collect vehicles in person
- Hand over vehicles at home or from a roadside pitch
- Employ staff who interact with the public or handle customer vehicles
- Allow customers to test drive vehicles from your location
For traders operating entirely online with courier delivery and no face-to-face contact, the risk is lower. But even occasional customer visits to your home address increase your exposure.
Car valeters face particularly high liability risk. Working on customer driveways with pressure washers, steam cleaners and polishers creates multiple opportunities for accidental damage or injury claims.
How much public liability cover do you need?
Most motor traders choose one of these cover levels:
- £1 million – suitable for sole traders working alone from home with minimal customer contact
- £2 million to £5 million – standard for garages, forecourts, valeters, MOT centres and businesses with regular public interaction
- £10 million – sometimes required by commercial landlords or larger clients before you can operate on their premises
Legal costs and compensation add up quickly, particularly for personal injury claims. A single serious injury claim can exhaust a £1 million limit.
If you’re unsure about the right level, understanding what level of motor trade insurance cover you really need can help you make an informed decision.
What public liability doesn’t cover
Public liability has specific exclusions:
- Employee injuries – you need employers’ liability insurance if you have staff
- Faulty workmanship or poor service – requires professional indemnity or sales indemnity cover
- Damage to vehicles you own or are selling – covered under road risk or stock insurance
- Deliberate acts or health and safety negligence – insurers won’t pay if you ignored basic safety rules
- Contractual disputes – only physical injury or property damage claims are covered
If a customer claims you damaged their vehicle while it was in your care, that typically falls under motor trade liability (also called garage liability), which is separate from public liability.
Real-world motor trade liability claims
Forecourt slip
A customer visits a small car sales forecourt and slips on oil near the office entrance, fracturing their wrist. They claim £12,000 compensation plus £4,000 legal costs. Public liability covers both.
Handover damage
A part-time trader delivers a car to a buyer’s home. While reversing on the driveway, they scrape the buyer’s other vehicle and damage a garden wall. Repair costs total £3,500, which public liability pays.
Mobile valeter accident
A mobile valeter uses a pressure washer at a client’s property. Water seeps under a door and damages laminate flooring. The £2,200 claim would come from the valeter’s own pocket without public liability cover.
How much does motor trade public liability insurance cost?
Public liability is typically one of the more affordable elements of a motor trade policy. Cost depends on:
- Your specific trade activity (valeting, sales, repairs)
- Number of employees
- Level of customer contact
- Premises type and location
- Cover limit chosen
- Claims history
For a sole trader working alone from home with £1 million cover, the additional premium often sits below £100 per year. Garages with staff and high footfall will pay more.
Adding public liability to an existing motor trade policy is usually cheaper than buying standalone cover. Most insurers bundle it with road risk and other essential protections.

Is public liability insurance worth it for motor traders?
For most motor traders who interact with customers or work on their premises, yes. The cost is low compared to the financial risk of a single claim.
Even if you work alone and only see a handful of customers each month, one accident could result in a claim that wipes out your annual profit. Personal injury claims regularly exceed £10,000 once legal costs are included.
The peace of mind alone makes it worthwhile. You can focus on growing your business rather than worrying about what happens if a customer trips over a toolbox or you accidentally reverse into their car.
