A no claims bonus (NCB) is a great thing to have as it can mean a cheaper deal on your insurance. That’s fine for people who haven’t had to claim on their insurance, but what can you do if you are one of the many people who do not have a no claims bonus?
Thankfully, there are a number of things you can do to keep your insurance down with or without a no claims discount. Scroll down to see our suggestions.
What is a no claims bonus?
A no claims bonus is built up each year that you drive and do not claim on your insurance. It is a way for insurance providers to reward their customers for not having to make a claim.
On the face of it, it seems reasonable to reward good, non-claiming, drivers by reducing their insurance costs, however I for one have experienced times when it is simply not fair.
In 2017 our car was parked outside of the house when during the day someone drove into it and disappeared without leaving any information. They caused just over £2000 worth of damage and we claimed on the insurance to fix it, therefore having to sacrifice the no claims bonus that we had just started collecting. I find it unbelievable that this situation exists and you too may be in a similar situation where through no fault of your own you have had to lose your bonus.
However as I said above, not all is lost.

Consider a black box
Black box technology has grown in popularity in recent years as it can help bring down insurance prices by tracking your driving. The box monitors a range of factors including how fast you go, how sharply you brake etc. etc. and rewards safer drivers with cheaper insurance. However, it’s not for everyone, which is why you may want to compare insurance without a black box here.
Protect Your No Claims Bonus/No Claims Discount
It may be too late this time, but there are insurance providers that have the option to protect your no claims bonus for certain claims. This may help in the future when you build up your bonus again.
Consider your Car Model/Modifications/Insurance Group
Every car is placed into an insurance group. Cars in a lower group are cheaper to insure. If you are yet to buy your car then it pays to take notice of insurance groups as it can significantly affect the price of your insurance premium. As well as grouping, modifications on cars can significantly increase costs whilst having an immobiliser and/or good alarm system can reduce costs.
Parking in a safe place
If at all possible it pays to keep your car off the road, ideally in your drive or even better yet in a garage. It’s self explanatory but having your car in a secure place reduces the chance of damage/theft and therefore leads to cheaper insurance costs.
So there you have it, losing your no claims bonus will inevitably push your insurance cost up but there are a number of ways you can counter that increase by shopping smart for your car insurance.
