What is short term car insurance?

Short term car insurance, also known as Temporary Car Insurance, is cover for a period of between 1 and 28 days and in some cases for as little as just 1 hour.

Why is short term car insurance useful?

From driving home a newly purchased car to sharing a long drive with friends on a weekend getaway, there are many uses for short term car insurance. When taking out short term car insurance to drive someone else’s vehicle, one of the key benefits is that in the event of a crash, the owner’s insurance will not be affected – although it will most probably still be extremely inconvenient.

It is also important to note that if you have a regular policy but are driving under your short term policy, your annual policy will not be affect in the event of a claim, leaving your no-claims bonus intact.

Short term car insurance or a named driver?

The other option would be to add the additional driver as a named driver on the insurance holder’s policy and could be worth checking with the insured’s policy provider. The downside to this is that it can be more expensive. It’s also worth bearing in mind that if the named driver were to crash, the policy holder would lose their no claims bonus & their premium would most likely increase the year after.

Are there any age limits on temporary car insurance?

Temporary car insurance is technically available at any age, including for learners (only in the form of learner driver insurance), however most insurers will require a minimum age of 21 and in some cases 25. You can get a quote to find the definitive answer based on your own circumstances.

Temporary car insurance for the long term?

If you only drive periodically you may be thinking that a temporary car insurance policy as and when you drive would be a viable alternative to a standard policy. It isn’t.  When keeping a car it is actually a legal requirement under the Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) rules for it to be insured or to declare it as SORN (statutory off road notification) with the DVLA.

How much does short term car insurance cost?

To get an accurate price you will need to get a quote, but as a rough guide you may be able to get insurance for as little as £7 per hour or £20 per day.
