*51% of consumers could save £535.17 on their Car Insurance. The saving was calculated by comparing the cheapest price found with the average of the next four cheapest prices quoted by insurance providers on Seopa Ltd’s insurance comparison website. This is based on representative cost savings from May 2026 data. The savings you could achieve are dependent on your individual circumstances and how you selected your current insurance supplier.

What is car insurance?

Car insurance is a legal requirement for any drivers on the road in the United Kingdom. Third-party car insurance protection is the minimum level of insurance cover required by law.

Car insurance provides financial protection for motorists, protecting you, your vehicle, and others in the event of an accident. The amount of protection varies depending on the level of insurance you purchase.

If you’re caught driving without car insurance, you can get a £300 fine and six penalty points. You may even eventually be disqualified from driving if your case goes to court and you rack up enough penalty points. To avoid getting into trouble with the law, compare quotes via Quote Goat and find car insurance that suits your budget.

How much is telematics car insurance?

Car insurance prices are based on the level of risk involved with insuring a driver, as determined by each insurance provider. So, the best way to find out how much it will cost you is to use a comparison service, like the one we use, to view live car insurance quotes.

Whilst some places do provide average figures for the cost of car insurance, we don’t believe it’s useful because everybody is unique. There are so many factors to take into account when calculating the price of an individual’s car insurance policy. Instead, why not remove the guess work and compare car insurance today?

What are the three types of cover?

It is a common misconception that opting for third-party-only cover is the cheapest option, but this is not always the case. If in doubt, compare quotes for all three types.

Level 1 · Legal minimum

Third party only

Covers damage or injury to a third party or their property in an incident where you are at fault. The least cover permitted by law; it does not cover your own car.

Level 2

Third party, fire and theft

Third-party cover with fire and theft added, so you are protected against loss or damage if your car is stolen or damaged by fire.

Most cover
Level 3

Fully comprehensive

The most complete cover available: damage or injury to your vehicle and yourself, as well as to third parties and their property. Always read the fine print, as what is included varies between policies.

Tips to help reduce the cost of your car insurance

The easiest way to save money is to use a car insurance comparison site to compare multiple quotes at the same time and choose the best car insurance for your needs. As well as this, there are a number of other tips that can help keep car insurance costs to a minimum.

Keep your licence clean

Speeding and other driving convictions indicate to insurance providers that a driver is riskier to insure. This added risk means your car insurance premium will be higher.

Build up a no claims discount

Insurance providers can offer better rates to drivers with longer no claims periods, because data shows you are more likely to claim if you already have. Think carefully before making a small claim, and once you have a long no claims period, consider protecting it.

Opt for a telematics (black box) policy

A black box lets your insurer see how fast and how often you drive, your braking, the time of day and where the car is. Good driving data can mean paying less; the opposite is also true.

Get a quote before you buy a car

Premiums vary significantly with the type of car. If you are in the market for a car, check how much it will cost to insure before buying to avoid any nasty surprises.

Pay yearly, not monthly

If there is a way you can pay annually, it could save you as much as 20% compared to paying monthly, because monthly premiums come with interest added.

Keep your car secure

A car with good security often benefits from cheaper car insurance. Alarms, immobilisers and tracking technology all reduce the risk of insuring a vehicle.

What details do I need to get a quote?

Have these to hand before you start.

1

Car information

Your car registration, or the make and model if you don’t know it. If you have not bought the car yet, that is fine too.

2

Driving history

How long you have been driving, details of any convictions, and any no-claims discount.

3

Personal details

Your name, contact details, address and job.

4

Car usage

What the car is used for, e.g. social, commuting or business, and your estimated annual mileage.

Car insurance groups

Every car belongs to an insurance group from 1 to 50, and the group plays a big part in what your cover costs. Cars in lower groups are generally cheaper to insure, so keep it in mind when buying your next car.

Groups 1–5

Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo, Ford Ka

Groups 20–30

Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, Land Rover Defender, VW Golf

Groups 40–50

Porsche Boxster, Ford Mustang, Subaru Impreza

Upgrades and optional extras

Tailor your policy with extra cover. Compare the price with and without.

Breakdown cover

Gets you and your car to the nearest garage or home if you break down. It can often be cheaper to buy breakdown cover separately.

Courtesy car

A car to use while yours is being fixed. Some policies include one as standard, others charge extra.

Personal accident cover

Compensation if you are injured in a car accident. Many comprehensive policies include it, but not all.

Motor legal protection

Covers legal expenses if a claim is made against you, or helps you claim from the person at fault.

Lost keys cover

The cost of replacing lost or stolen keys, which on newer cars can run into hundreds of pounds.

Windscreen repair

Fixing chips or cracks, and sometimes replacement, usually with a small excess.

No claims discount protection

Keeps your no-claims bonus intact if you need to claim. How much is protected varies between providers.

Personal belongings cover

Possessions stolen from your car or damaged in an accident. Typically included with comprehensive cover, rarely with third party, fire and theft.

Misfuelling cover

Draining and cleaning the tank if the wrong fuel goes in. Usually sits under accidental damage; check what your policy includes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I actually need insurance?

Yes. Car insurance is a legal requirement when driving on roads in the UK. If caught driving uninsured, you can receive a fine and penalty points.

Do I need to buy car insurance if my car is off the road?

If you are not driving your vehicle or keeping it in a garage, you can apply for a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN), which exempts it from the insurance requirement and refunds any full months of remaining tax. You cannot drive it on the road until you tax it again. You can still choose to cover it against fire and theft.

How do I check if my car is insured?

Use your registration number on the Motor Insurance Database (MID), the national register of every insured car in the UK. The search is free and shows whether the vehicle has a valid policy, though not the policy details.

Should I pay car insurance premiums monthly or annually?

If you can afford it, paying annually is cheaper. Monthly payments include the cost of borrowing, which can be as much as 20% APR.

Will buying car insurance affect my credit report?

If you pay monthly you will be credit-checked, because monthly premiums are effectively a form of credit over 12 months.

How do I know how many miles I drive each year?

Think about your commute, school runs and weekend and evening use to arrive at an approximate figure. You will need it to get an accurate quote.

How are quotes calculated?

Insurers price a policy on the level of risk a driver presents: job, driving history, address, mileage, vehicle and more. Comparison websites bring those results together so you can see the options for your circumstances.

Will I be charged if I cancel my insurance policy?

Some providers charge an admin fee for cancelling or missing a payment. A refund may be given within the cooling-off period, though a fee for the time the policy was active may still be deducted. Always review your policy documents.

How does the excess work on an insurance policy?

An excess has two parts: a compulsory amount set by the insurer and a voluntary amount set by you. A higher voluntary excess can lower your premium, but you pay that amount towards any claim, so make sure you can afford it.

How long is my quote valid for?

Quotes are valid for 30 days but are subject to change.

I claimed on my policy last year, will my renewal price be a lot higher?

It is likely you will be quoted higher prices after a claim, as insurers treat you as a higher risk. It pays to check by comparing quotes.

When might an insurance claim be rejected?

If you claim for something your policy does not cover, if you gave incorrect information when you bought it, or if you have not kept up your payments. Read the policy wording so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Does a comprehensive policy cover me driving someone else’s car?

Check your policy documents. It can be a feature of comprehensive cover, but it is very rarely included with third party or third party, fire and theft policies.
